Amanda Seyfried Criticizes Hollywood’s Sequel Obsession, Calls for More Original Films

Washington [US], July 17: Actress Amanda Seyfried has voiced her discontent with Hollywood’s increasing dependence on sequels, calling the trend financially motivated and creatively uninspired. In a recent interview quoted by Variety, Seyfried emphasized the importance of original storytelling.

“I think it’s really scary and brave to do [original films]. It’s not scary and not very brave to do sequels. It’s just for money and it’s frustrating,” Seyfried said.

Her remarks arrive during a summer dominated by high-profile sequels, including James Gunn’s Superman and Jurassic World Rebirth.

During the interview, Superman star Rachel Brosnahan jokingly asked, “What’s our Barbenheimer between Fantastic Four, Jurassic Park, and Superman?” Seyfried replied with a touch of humor, “It’s Fantastic Super-park. It’s Four Superparks. Four Dinosaurs. Four Super Dinosaurs. I don’t know!”

Despite her critique, Seyfried herself has featured in sequels like Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and Ted 2. She clarified, however, that she would “eagerly” return for Mamma Mia 3 if it were to happen. She also revealed she’s involved in early talks for a potential Jennifer’s Body sequel with co-star Megan Fox, though she emphasized she would only do it alongside Fox.

Meanwhile, Brosnahan shared that she would return for a Superman sequel, expressing excitement about working with more of the ensemble cast. She also addressed the common trend of actors criticizing superhero films after joining them: “Do it or don’t do it, and then stand by it,” she said.

James Gunn’s Superman is set to hit theatres on July 11.
