The ongoing musical feud surrounding the hit 2019 song “Bekhayali” from the film Kabir Singh has erupted into a major public controversy. Composers Sachet Tandon and Parampara Thakur (Sachet-Parampara) released a strong video statement accusing fellow composer Amaal Mallik of repeatedly making false claims about the song’s origins and attempting to undermine their credit.
In the video’s caption, the duo wrote, “SHAME ON YOU AMAAL MALIK,” stating that they felt compelled to speak out for their “mental peace” and to shut down long-standing rumors. Sachet-Parampara asserted that “Bekhayali” is a purely original composition, created during collaborative music sessions with the Kabir Singh team, including actor Shahid Kapoor and director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, all of whom they claim can attest to the song’s true authorship.
Amaal Mallik Breaks Silence, Demands Legal Action
Following the highly publicized video, Amaal Mallik addressed the allegations in a media interview, vehemently denying that he has ever claimed ownership of work he did not create. Mallik challenged the duo’s approach, arguing that if their claims were legitimate, they should pursue legal recourse rather than public shaming.
“I’ll take the bullet but speak the truth. If someone wants to malign my name within the industry, which they do… People put their names on other’s songs and say ‘maine banaya’. Never done that,” Mallik stated. He further questioned why they chose to use social media instead of the courts: “If anyone has a problem, go to the court straight up. Do a case of defamation if you feel I have copied your music.“
The Heart of the Dispute
The core of the disagreement lies in earlier statements made by Amaal Mallik, who had suggested in interviews that Sachet-Parampara allegedly used a tune or musical reference he had shared with them via WhatsApp as the basis for “Bekhayali.”
Sachet-Parampara have strongly refuted this claim, calling it “baseless.” They countered Mallik’s narrative by showing old chat screenshots, which they claim only showed Mallik congratulating them on the song’s release and praising the track, with no mention of shared work or ownership. The duo also highlighted that at the time of Kabir Singh, they were newcomers without industry backing, while Mallik had an existing association with the music label, rejecting any suggestion of industry favoritism on their part.
As of now, the dispute remains a public war of words, with Sachet-Parampara demanding a public apology from Mallik for damaging their reputation, though neither party has confirmed initiating a court case.
