New Delhi [India]: Congress leader Rashid Alvi has questioned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s allegations regarding a supposed Pakistan-ISI link involving Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s wife. Alvi demanded to know the source of the CM’s claims and the evidence supporting them.
He further asked why no First Information Report (FIR) had been lodged if any credible information or proof existed.
Speaking to media, Alvi said, “I don’t know which Pakistani national’s name he is taking, but first of all, the CM should tell where did this information come from? What proof does he have for this? If indeed some information came to him, then why has no FIR been lodged till now?”
Alvi criticized the nature of political discourse, stating that such accusations should not be made without substantial proof.
“The level of politics should not stoop so low. There is a limit for everything. Defaming opposition leaders and their families by speaking in the media is not appropriate. Such statements are unfortunate,” he added.
Assam Cabinet Orders Probe into Pakistani National’s Conduct
The controversy follows the Assam cabinet’s directive to the state Director General of Police (DGP) to register a case against Ali Sheikh, a Pakistani national, and investigate his alleged “anti-India agenda.”
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma challenged Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi regarding his remarks on taking legal action over the allegations against his wife. Sarma stated that such legal steps would help expedite the inquiry.
Addressing a press conference, Sarma said, “India is a democratic country. Everybody can take appropriate action. If he goes to the Court, it will be very good. Then many matters which today we cannot speak of, we can speak before the judge… If he decides to go to the court, we will welcome that and this will expedite the process of inquiry. If anybody is innocent, they will be declared innocent by the court of law. We have no objection to it, but this matter needs to be investigated very seriously.”
The Assam cabinet’s resolution noted that after reviewing Ali Sheikh’s social media activity and publicly available information, it appeared that he had been in contact with Elizabeth Gogoi, a British national and the wife of Gaurav Gogoi.
