“All My Cricket Is Mental”: Virat Kohli Opens Up After Stunning 135 On International Comeback

Returning to international cricket after a month-long break, Virat Kohli announced his comeback in the grandest way possible — with yet another masterclass. The former India captain hammered his 52nd ODI century and 83rd international ton, scoring a breathtaking 135 off 120 balls in the opening match against South Africa.

Speaking after the match, Kohli made it clear that for him, the mental side of batting outweighs hours of technical preparation. His philosophy has always leaned toward clarity of mind rather than hitting endless balls in practice.

“I have never been a believer of a lot of preparation. All my cricket has been mental. I work physically very hard, and as long as my fitness levels are up and I’m feeling well, it’s good,” Kohli said, indirectly addressing those who questioned his match readiness after a long break.

His comments also offered a subtle hint about his stance on playing in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, something the national selectors reportedly want him to participate in. If one reads between the lines, Kohli doesn’t see the need for additional domestic games when his mental and physical preparation is already aligned.

“I’ve played 300-odd ODI games and so much cricket; if you’re in touch with the game and are able to hit balls in practice, if you bat for an hour or two in the nets, you know you’re good.
If you’re out of form, you want to play more in the nets. Other than that, it’s about being mentally ready and enjoying the game,” he added.

For this series, Kohli arrived in Ranchi a couple of days before his teammates to familiarise himself with conditions, ensuring he could ease back into the intensity of international cricket.

“I wanted to get hold of the conditions in Ranchi. I visualise the game a lot, and when I see myself being intense and sharp, I know I can relax and play out there. I am 37, so I also need to take care of my body,” he said, acknowledging the balance he seeks as a seasoned athlete.

Kohli also spoke about rediscovering the simple joy of the sport — something that becomes more important with experience and age.

“Today was really nice to get into the game like that. The pitch played decently for 20–25 overs before slowing down. I just wanted to play the ball and enjoy the game of cricket.
It was about being in a space of enjoyment. And when you get a start, then the experience kicks in and you’re able to build an innings,” he said.

Kohli’s statement, performance, and calm command at the crease reaffirmed why he remains one of modern cricket’s most formidable batsmen — mentally sharp, physically fit, and always ready to rise when it matters.
