Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], February 27: Bollywood star Akshay Kumar is set to once again portray the deity Lord Shiva in the upcoming Telugu film Kannappa. The movie, directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh, marks Akshay’s debut in Telugu cinema and is slated for release on April 25, 2025.
In a recent statement, Akshay expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to take on such a divine role again, following his portrayal of Lord Shiva in OMG 2 (2023). He recalled his previous role as Lord Krishna in OMG (2012) and noted, “It’s quite rare for an actor to get the opportunity to play such divine roles. I feel quite fortunate to have received these opportunities.”
The actor also shared a personal anecdote about his father, who had once been asked to play Lord Shiva on screen in a brief cameo. “My father, who worked in the army and was a wrestler, was approached for the role. It’s a great coincidence that now, I am also playing Lord Shiva,” Akshay reflected.
The film’s teaser was unveiled at a grand event in Mumbai, where Akshay was joined by actors like Madhoo, Vishnu Manchu, and director Mukesh Kumar Singh. The teaser, which was initially teased on Akshay’s 57th birthday in September 2024, showcases his portrayal of Lord Shiva, though his face remains hidden.
Kannappa is inspired by the legendary tale of Kannappa, a devotee of Lord Shiva, and is expected to blend traditional storytelling with modern filmmaking techniques. Vishnu Manchu, who portrays the titular role of Kannappa, expressed his pride in having Akshay on board. Despite initial rejections, Akshay Kumar was convinced to take the role after Vishnu’s belief in him.
Vishnu shared, “Akshay rejected the role twice, but his dedication and belief in the story convinced me that he was the perfect choice to bring Lord Shiva to life.”
The film also features renowned actors like Mohanlal and Prabhas, with Vishnu expressing deep spiritual connection to the film’s theme. “This is not just a project; it’s a personal journey for me. The story of Kannappa, full of devotion and sacrifice, touches the soul. Having legends like Akshay Kumar, Mohanlal, and Prabhas joining this journey gives me immense pride,” said Vishnu.
Fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Kannappa which promises to be a visual and emotional masterpiece. The film’s teaser will be officially dropped on March 1, 2025, with the movie scheduled to release in theatres worldwide on April 25, 2025.
