New Delhi (India), December 17: Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav has strongly criticized the “One Nation, One Election” bill, arguing that it could centralize power, threaten India’s democratic system, and pave the way for dictatorship.
In a post on X, Yadav expressed his concerns, stating that the concept of “one” in democracy is undemocratic and fosters an environment of ego, potentially turning power into dictatorship. He emphasized that democracy thrives on plurality and diversity, not uniformity.
Yadav warned that the bill would undermine India’s federal structure by sidelining regional issues and diminishing the role of states. He claimed that the creation of states based on linguistic, cultural, and geographical similarities was a foundational principle of India’s democracy, and that the “One Nation, One Election” proposal was an attempt to erode that system.
The SP chief also accused the BJP of undermining the Constitution with the bill and expressed fears that it could eventually lead to the dissolution of the Rajya Sabha. He cautioned that such moves would mark a dangerous shift towards autocracy, suggesting the next step could be a “One Nation, One Assembly” model.
Yadav further criticized the BJP for diverting attention from critical issues such as inflation, unemployment, and public health, questioning whether these problems were being overshadowed by the “One Nation, One Election” proposal.
In his post, Yadav urged citizens, party workers, journalists, and leaders to educate the public about the potential dangers of the bill, warning that it could lead to dictatorship and the dismantling of democratic values in the country.
