Air India AI-171 Crash: 198 Mortal Remains Handed Over, 222 Victims Identified So Far

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 20: Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, Dr. Rakesh Joshi, confirmed on Thursday that 215 DNA samples from the Air India AI-171 crash victims have been matched, and 198 mortal remains have been handed over to their families.

Speaking to reporters, Joshi stated,

“Of the 198 deceased, 149 are Indian nationals, seven Portuguese, 32 British, and one Canadian. The remains of 15 victims were dispatched by air, and 183 were transported by road in ambulances.”

Earlier, Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik said that 222 victims have been identified so far, 214 through DNA testing and eight without it.

“Bodies have been returned to the respective families. While police are handling parts of the investigation, technical aspects like black box analysis are being conducted by specialized agencies,” Malik added.

Aviation Minister Reviews National Preparedness

In response to the tragedy, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu convened a high-level video conference with all Airport Directors across India. The focus was on ground-level readiness and passenger support systems amid flight rescheduling caused by accidents, weather conditions, and airspace restrictions.

As per the Ministry of Civil Aviation, directives issued include:

  • Immediate coordination with airlines to address passenger grievances
  • Ensuring availability of food, water, and seating during delays
  • Deployment of adequate staff at critical passenger service points

Background: AI-171 Tragedy

On June 12, Air India flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to London, crashed into the hostel complex of BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad’s Meghani Nagar shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

The crash resulted in 241 fatalities out of 242 onboard, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
