Poonch, Jammu & Kashmir- A landmine detonation along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu & Kashmir’s Poonch region on Friday killed an Indian Army Agniveer soldier and injured two others. The incident has placed a dark cloud over the region, which is already on high alert.
The White Knight Corps of the Indian Army went on X (previously Twitter) to confirm the soldier’s death and express their deep sadness. Their post said: “#GOC #WhiteKnightCorps and all ranks pay profound respect to Agniveer Lalit Kumar of 7 JAT Regiment, who died while on an area domination patrol in the approximate region of #KrishnaGhati brigade on 25 July 2025, after a mine detonation. We are with the family who is grieving at this time.
Recent activities and security issues at the border
This sad event comes after a time when people were more watchful and active throughout the LoC. Last month, army troops had to shoot after seeing suspicious movement in a forward sector near the LoC in the Rajouri region. In the morning, troops saw three to four people hiding under heavy foliage in the Chingus area of Rajouri’s Kiri sector, according to officials. After then, soldiers shot more than two dozen bullets, searched at the same time, and sent out drones, but they couldn’t find any sign of the people they thought were involved.
Security officers have been searching a lot of different districts, such as Poonch, Samba, and Kathua. Local police, the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force), and the Rashtriya Rifles have all taken part in these operations in the Surankote and Mendhar areas of Poonch. There were other searches in places like Sari, Ustan, Pathankhor, Lohar Mohalla, Chandimarh, Phagal, Hari top, Kaagwali in Surankote, Limba, Ucchad, and Kallar-Gursai in Mendhar, but no one was arrested.
There has also been a lot of shelling over the LoC, especially during “Operation Sindoor,” when Pakistan allegedly tried to attack India in response.
Keeping Amarnath Yatra safe is still a top priority.
Because of the ongoing annual Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage, there has been a lot of security in the valley. Earlier this week, Nalin Prabhat, the Director General of Police (DGP), led a high-level joint meeting to go over the security plans for the Budha Amarnath Yatra in Poonch.
The “Budha Amarnath” pilgrimage will begin on July 28 at the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu and last for 13 days. It will end on August 9. Officials have confirmed that DGP Nalin Prabhat, Special DGP Javaid Gillani, IGP Bhimsen Tuti, and IG CRPF Gopal K Rao went to the district police lines in Poonch to meet with officers from Rajouri and Poonch to go over security plans for the approaching yatra.
The sad loss of Agniveer Lalit Kumar is a strong reminder of how dangerous things are at the LoC and how much soldiers give up to protect the country’s boundaries.
