Escalating Tensions: Suvendu Adhikari Issues Ultimatum To Bangladesh Mission In Kolkata

The diplomatic standoff between India and Bangladesh has spilled onto the streets of Kolkata. On Tuesday, December 23, 2025, West Bengal’s Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari issued a stern warning to the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission, stating he would not allow the mission to function on Indian soil if his request for a meeting is denied.

The Context: Outrage Over the Lynching of Dipu Chandra Das

The unrest stems from the horrific killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old Hindu garment factory worker in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, on December 18.

  • The Incident: Das was allegedly lynched by a mob over unverified blasphemy rumors, hanged from a tree, and his body was later set on fire.
  • The Response: While the Bangladesh interim government has arrested 21 suspects, the incident has triggered a wave of “Hindu Hunkar” protests across major Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata.

Clashes in Kolkata: Tuesday’s Timeline

The situation in Kolkata turned volatile on Tuesday afternoon during a march organized under the banner of ‘Bongiyo Hindu Jagaran Mancha’.

EventDescription
The MarchHundreds of protesters, including saffron-clad monks and activists from the VHP and ABVP, marched from Sealdah toward the Deputy High Commission in Park Circus.
The BarrierKolkata Police set up a three-layer security perimeter at Beckbagan, roughly 800 meters from the mission, to prevent a security breach.
The ClashProtesters attempted to break iron barricades and human chains. Police resorted to a lathi charge (baton charge) to disperse the crowd.
Casualties & ArrestsAt least 12 protesters were arrested. Adhikari claimed several people, including a woman, were severely injured and required emergency care.

Adhikari’s “Three-Step” Ultimatum

Following the police action, Suvendu Adhikari addressed a press conference, drawing a parallel between West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, alleging both are “targeting Sanatanis.”

  1. Direct Meeting: Adhikari has sought a formal appointment with the Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner to discuss the safety of Hindus.
  2. Border Blockade (Dec 24): He has called for a one-hour symbolic blockade at the Indo-Bangladesh border on Wednesday to protest the “barbaric atrocities.”
  3. Mass Mobilisation (Dec 26): If the envoy refuses to meet him, Adhikari has threatened to return to the mission with 10,000 people on Friday, December 26.

“We will not let the deputy high commission function smoothly on Indian soil,” Adhikari warned.

Diplomatic Fallout

The tension is not limited to the streets. On Monday, Bangladesh temporarily suspended visa services in New Delhi citing “unavoidable circumstances.” Meanwhile, New Delhi has summoned the Bangladeshi envoy to register strong objections over the “horrendous killing” of Dipu Das and the safety of its own diplomatic staff in Dhaka.
