The Adani Group is exploring plans to bring Formula 1 racing back to India by restarting the iconic motorsport event at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, according to Karan Adani, Managing Director of Adani Cement.
Speaking on Saturday at the 70th Foundation Day event of the All India Management Association (AIMA) in New Delhi, Karan Adani said he is personally involved in efforts to revive the F1 event and believes India has strong potential as a global motorsport destination.
“I’m very excited. Obviously, the Buddh Circuit comes as part of the deal. I’m very personally engaged in bringing Formula 1 back into India. I think India has a lot of potential, and there is a strong following for Formula 1 in the country,” Adani said.
According to official sources, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya recently visited the Buddh International Circuit and held discussions with officials of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), signalling government-level interest in reviving the prestigious racing event.
Adani Group’s Bid for Jaiprakash Associates
The Buddh International Circuit is currently linked to Jaiprakash Associates Ltd (JAL), the flagship firm of the Jaypee Group, which is facing financial distress. The Adani Group is among the frontrunners to acquire JAL.
In November 2025, the conglomerate secured the majority vote from lenders for its ₹14,535-crore acquisition proposal, which offered a higher upfront payment compared to rival bidders.
India’s Growing Global Appeal for Formula 1
Karan Adani said he has been following Formula 1 since 2000 and believes India can emerge as a benchmark host for global sporting events.
“The reputation of India and Indians has improved significantly. India can showcase Formula 1 and become a benchmark for global events,” he said.
He added that Indian fans currently travel to destinations such as Abu Dhabi and Singapore to experience Formula 1, and hosting the event domestically would boost tourism, hospitality, and global perception of Indian infrastructure and heritage.
Formula 1’s Past in India
India previously hosted Formula 1 races at the Buddh International Circuit in 2011, 2012, and 2013. However, the event was discontinued after a tax dispute with the Uttar Pradesh government, which classified the race as entertainment rather than a sporting event, leading to financial and regulatory complications.
