Los Angeles [US], June 1: Get ready for another round of outrageous swings and wild laughs — Adam Sandler is back on the green with Happy Gilmore 2, nearly three decades after the original film became a cult sports-comedy hit.
The highly anticipated sequel was officially revealed during Netflix’s Tudum fan event in Los Angeles on Saturday, with the first trailer debuting to massive fan excitement.
Directed by Kyle Newacheck and co-written by Sandler and longtime collaborator Tim Herlihy, the film picks up the story of Happy nearly 30 years after he first took the golf world (and moviegoers) by storm in 1996.
“The movie itself picks up from an older guy who played golf a long time. Some stuff goes on in his life, and he’s different — he’s a bit of a mess,” Sandler said during an appearance on New Heights, the podcast hosted by NFL star Travis Kelce, who also has a role in the film. “Then we try to get his life cooking again.”
Returning Favorites and Star-Studded Cast
Joining Sandler are original cast members:
- Christopher McDonald as the smarmy nemesis Shooter McGavin
- Julie Bowen as Happy’s love interest, Virginia
The sequel will also feature surprising cameos and appearances from:
- Rap icon Eminem
- Golf legends Jack Nicklaus, John Daly, and Jordan Spieth
Sandler, now 58, acknowledged the pressure of living up to the original during an interview with The Dan Patrick Show last year:
“It’s on your mind… We’ve got a lot of good stuff, and we just want to make sure that it all comes together from start to finish. We’re definitely nervous, but we feel some sort of confidence.”
Legacy of a Comedy Classic
The original Happy Gilmore (1996), directed by Dennis Dugan, became one of Sandler’s defining roles, mixing absurd humor with heartfelt underdog spirit — a formula that struck a chord with audiences and made the film a generational favorite.
