Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan has been booked for alleged assault and verbal abuse following a complaint filed by his former manager, Vipin Kumar, marking a fresh controversy for the actor known for his roles in action films and recent resignation from the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA).
The incident reportedly occurred on May 26, in the basement of Mukundan’s apartment complex in Kochi, where the actor allegedly physically assaulted and verbally threatened Kumar during a meeting initiated by Mukundan himself.
“I worked as Unni Mukundan’s manager for six years. I filed a case on May 26 because he physically assaulted me, verbally abused me, and even issued a life threat,” said Vipin Kumar in a statement to media.
According to Kumar, the altercation turned physical quickly, and another person present had to intervene to stop Mukundan. The FIR has been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
‘Marco’ Fallout and Alleged Frustration
Vipin Kumar has claimed that the actor’s aggression was likely linked to his frustration following the underwhelming industry response to his recent film, Marco.
“After the movie Marco, he was visibly upset that no leading directors were approaching him. He seemed to vent that frustration on me,” said Kumar.
He further alleged that Mukundan used foul language and slapped him in the parking area, escalating the matter beyond verbal conflict.
Unni Mukundan Counters with Police Complaint
In response, Unni Mukundan has filed a counter-complaint with the Director General of Police (DGP) against Vipin Kumar. The details of Mukundan’s complaint remain undisclosed, but it signals a legal standoff between the two.
AMMA Resignation and Background
This controversy emerges on the heels of Mukundan’s resignation as Treasurer of AMMA earlier this year. In a public Instagram statement dated January 14, Mukundan cited mental health concerns and increasing work pressure, particularly due to Marco, as reasons for stepping down.
“My current projects, particularly Marco, have placed significant demands on my time and affected my mental health,” he wrote.
He had offered to continue in his post until a smooth handover was completed.
Mukundan’s resignation came amid wider unrest within AMMA, which saw a mass resignation of its 17-member executive committee, including President Mohanlal, in August 2024. The shake-up followed the release of the Justice K. Hema Committee Report, which criticized unsafe and unequal conditions for women in the Malayalam film industry.
What’s Next?
As both parties proceed with legal action, the case is likely to draw scrutiny within the film fraternity and media. Whether the matter settles amicably or escalates legally remains to be seen, but it has undoubtedly cast a shadow on Mukundan’s professional image and personal trajectory.
