Climate Frustration Erupts: Activists Clash With Security At UN COP30 Talks In Brazil

A tense confrontation broke out between a group of climate activists and security personnel on Tuesday at the United Nations climate talks, known as COP30, currently being held in Belém, a city in the Brazilian Amazon. The activists briefly managed to breach the security perimeter at the main venue entrance before being pushed back. The U.N. later confirmed that two security workers sustained minor injuries in the scuffle.

The confrontation occurred late in the day as participants and delegates were filtering out of the conference venue.

UN Confirms Security Breach and Investigation

The U.N. Climate Change body issued a statement immediately following the incident, confirming the extent of the breach:

“Earlier this evening, a group of protesters breached security barriers at the main entrance to the COP, causing minor injuries to two security staff, and minor damage to the venue.”

The statement clarified that both Brazilian and U.N. security personnel swiftly took protective action, adhering to all established security protocols to secure the venue. Both Brazilian and U.N. authorities have launched a joint investigation into the incident. The U.N. assured that despite the clash, the venue is now fully secured, and the COP negotiations are continuing as planned.

Witness Account Details Escalation

Agustin Ocaña, the mobilization coordinator for youth with the Global Youth Coalition, provided an eyewitness account to The Associated Press. Ocaña was outside when he observed two distinct groups—some wearing yellow shirts and others in the traditional garb of Indigenous communities—marching toward the venue.

Initially, the groups were engaging in non-violent activities, mainly “just dancing and chanting,” Ocaña said. However, he noted that the situation quickly escalated when security guards reacted to the approach by forcefully closing the doors and calling for additional guards. He did not witness which group first broke through the security barrier.

Ocaña reported hearing some of the people attempting to enter chant, “They cannot decide for us without us,” a phrase highlighting ongoing tensions regarding the perceived lack of meaningful participation and consultation of Indigenous people in the high-level climate conference. The clash turned physical as he observed members of both sides striking each other, using small plastic bins meant for security checks as makeshift weapons. One guard was seen bleeding from a blow to the head, and Ocaña noted two or three protesters with visible bruises.

A Cry of Desperation

Ocaña explained that the deep-seated frustration driving the activists, particularly the Indigenous communities, stems from witnessing large resources poured into the conference logistics—which he described as building “a whole new city”—while crucial needs for education, health, and the physical protection of the Amazon rainforest remain critically underfunded.

“They were not doing this because they were bad people. They’re desperate trying to protect their land, the river,” Ocaña stressed, emphasizing the motivation was rooted in environmental defense.

He concluded that the world must view this incident as a warning sign: “It’s important the world knows this is just a small piece of what can happen if we keep having these never-ending conversations about how we’re going to protect the planet while we keep destroying it.”
