Abhishek Sharma Sets Record For Most Sixes By An Indian In T20I Chase

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], January 23: Abhishek Sharma produced a spectacular performance in the first T20I against England, smashing a rapid 20-ball half-century and setting a new record for the most sixes by an Indian in a T20I run chase, according to Wisden.

The match, played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, saw India’s spinners shine as they restricted England to just 132 runs. Varun Chakravarthy (3/23) and Axar Patel (2/22) were the standout bowlers, with Jos Buttler being the lone batter to offer resistance, scoring 68 runs off 44 balls before falling to Chakravarthy.

Chasing down the modest target, India raced to victory in just 12.5 overs, with seven wickets in hand. Abhishek Sharma led the charge with an explosive 79 off just 34 balls, including a record-breaking eight sixes — the most by any Indian in a T20I chase. Sanju Samson (26 off 20) and Tilak Varma (19 off 16) also contributed, as India comfortably reached the target.

Abhishek’s six-hitting spree was impressive, with three maximums off Adil Rashid, two against Mark Wood, and one each off Jofra Archer, Jamie Overton, and Gus Atkinson. His eight sixes surpassed the previous Indian record of six sixes in a T20I chase, a feat previously shared by Rohit Sharma (twice), Suryakumar Yadav, Virat Kohli, Tilak Varma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Axar Patel.

Globally, the record for the most sixes in a T20I chase stands at 18 by Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan, while among players from Full Member nations, South Africa’s Richard Levi holds the record with 13 sixes against New Zealand.

Abhishek’s power-hitting performance is part of a proud tradition of Indian left-handers dominating English bowlers in T20I cricket — a legacy first cemented by Yuvraj Singh’s exploits in the 2007 T20 World Cup. Mentored by Yuvraj, Abhishek showcased his explosive batting in the series opener. His 50 came off just 20 balls, making it the second-fastest fifty by an Indian against England in T20Is.

Yuvraj holds the record for the fastest fifty by an Indian in T20Is, having reached the landmark in just 12 balls against South Africa in 2007.
