New Delhi (India), February 5: As polling continues for the Delhi Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Satyendar Jain expressed confidence in his party’s victory and urged voters to cast their ballots for a stronger democracy and better future. Jain, who is contesting from the Shakur Basti constituency, is aiming for a fourth consecutive win in the seat.
“To strengthen democracy and for a better future, all of us should go out and vote… We are eyeing a next-term victory for AAP,” Jain said.
Jain is up against BJP’s Karnail Singh and Congress’s Satish Luthra in the electoral battle for Shakur Basti. The polling, which began at 7:00 am, has seen a voter turnout of 33.31% by 1:00 pm, as reported by the Election Commission of India. The North-East district of Delhi recorded the highest turnout at 39.51%, while the Central district had the lowest at 29.74%.
Concerns over the voting process have emerged, with AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj accusing the Delhi Police of attempting to prevent voters from casting their ballots at a polling station in Chirag Delhi. Bhardwaj claimed that barricades were being placed to influence the election in 17-18 polling booths. However, South Delhi DCP Ankit Chauhan assured that the police would investigate the matter.
Additionally, AAP MP Sanjay Singh claimed that a new party member, Uday Gill, had been detained by the police without any valid reason. Singh posted on X, expressing his presence at Mandir Marg police station, where Gill was reportedly held. However, the official handle of DCP New Delhi responded, stating that Gill had been detained for allegedly forcing people to vote for a particular political party.
The voting for the 70 Delhi Assembly seats continues under tight security, with results expected to be announced on February 8.
