Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], January 11: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Partap Singh Bajwa expressed deep sorrow over the untimely demise of Gurpreet Gogi, the AAP MLA from Ludhiana West, calling it a significant loss for both his constituency and the party.
Bajwa, the Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly, shared his grief on social media, saying, “Deeply saddened to hear about the tragic and untimely demise of AAP Punjab MLA Gurpreet Gogi. His passing is an immense and irreparable loss, not only to his family but also to the countless people he represented and served with dedication in the assembly. His contributions will always be remembered. I pray to the Almighty to grant strength and courage to his family and loved ones to bear this profound loss. May his soul rest in peace.”
AAP National Convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also expressed his condolences, describing Gogi as a leader who served his people with unwavering dedication and compassion. “Deeply saddened to learn about the untimely passing of Gurpreet Gogi Bassi, MLA from Ludhiana. A leader who served his people with unwavering dedication and compassion, his absence will leave a void that is hard to fill. May his soul rest in peace,” Kejriwal wrote on social media.
Gogi, aged 56, was found dead with bullet injuries late Sunday night after an accidental shooting, as confirmed by a Punjab Police official. The incident occurred around midnight, and Gogi was rushed to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMC), where he was declared dead.
Punjab Minister Hardip Singh Mundian also shared his sorrow over Gogi’s passing, recalling their close relationship. “We received very unfortunate news of the demise of Gurpreet Gogi. What we know is that it was an accident. It’s a loss for the party and me personally. He was like an elder brother,” Mundian said.
Punjab Minister Aman Arora expressed his condolences to Gogi’s family, calling the loss shocking and heartbreaking. “Shocked and heartbroken by the loss of Gurpreet Gogi Bassi, MLA from Ludhiana. My deepest condolences to the grieving family during this difficult time. May they find the strength to endure this painful loss. I pray to the Almighty that his noble soul rests in eternal peace,” Arora wrote.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jaskaran Singh Teja, Gogi reportedly shot himself accidentally, sustaining bullet injuries to his head. The MLA was declared dead at the hospital, and his body has been kept in the mortuary at DMC Hospital. “Cause of death will be clear once the post-mortem reports come,” said the DCP.
Gogi, who joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2022, had made a significant impact by defeating two-time former Congress MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu in the Ludhiana assembly elections.
