A$AP Rocky Recalls ‘Trash’ Audition for Solo: A Star Wars Story, Prepares For Cannes Debut With Denzel Washington

Washington [US] : American rapper A$AP Rocky has opened up about his failed audition for the role of Lando Calrissian in the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story, ultimately played by Donald Glover.

In a candid conversation, Rocky admitted, “My audition was trash. I was trash that day,” acknowledging that Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, was better suited for the role. “My man Childish Gambino was a way better Lando than I would’ve provided at that time. And I think he looked a little more like [Billy Dee Williams] than me,” Rocky told People.

Solo: A Star Wars Story, directed by Ron Howard, explores the early adventures of Han Solo and Chewbacca, featuring a star-studded cast including Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, and Donald Glover as Lando. The film is set a decade before the events of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977).

Despite the unsuccessful audition, A$AP Rocky said he’s open to trying again: “Hell, yeah,” when asked if he’d give another Star Wars film a shot.

Rocky is now preparing for a major cinematic appearance alongside Denzel Washington in the upcoming film Highest 2 Lowest, which will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025. The movie, directed by Spike Lee, is a modern reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller High and Low, now set on the streets of New York City.

Highest 2 Lowest features a powerhouse cast including Denzel Washington, Ilfenesh Hadera, Jeffrey Wright, Ice Spice in her film debut, and A$AP Rocky. The film is set to release in select theaters on August 22 and will stream on Apple TV+ starting September 5.
