Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh has filed a Suspension of Business notice under Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha, urging a discussion on the increasing crime rates in the national capital.
In his motion submitted to the Rajya Sabha Secretary-General, Singh highlighted the alarming rise in criminal activities in Delhi, referring to it as the “capital of crime.”
“I would like to draw your attention to the increasing crimes in the country’s capital. The Prime Minister, ministers, foreign ambassadors, and MPs of both houses live in Delhi. The country’s capital has become the capital of crime,” Singh wrote.
Key Concerns Raised by Sanjay Singh
Singh’s notice, supported by data from leading newspapers, outlined worrying crime statistics for 2024:
- Robbery cases increased by 23%.
- Theft cases surged by 25.2%.
- Attempted murders rose by 18%.
The notice also emphasized Delhi’s position as the leading metro in crimes against women and highlighted flaws in law enforcement.
“Delhi tops the list of crimes against women among metros. This clearly shows the flaws in the functioning of law and order,” he added.
Alarming Trends and Security Lapses
Singh expressed concern over several issues, including crimes against women and senior citizens, gang wars, extortion of traders, and fatal road accidents:
- Crimes Against Women: Persistent increase causing widespread panic.
- Senior Citizens and Fatal Accidents: Over 878 fatal road accidents reported.
- Organized Crime: Gang wars and illegal extortion have heightened fear among residents.
He also referred to recent bomb threats in the capital as a significant failure of the security system.
“The recent bomb threats in Delhi in 2024 have brought to the fore fearless criminals who are not afraid of the policies of the ministry and attempt this activity from the country’s Parliament to AIIMS, showing the failure of the security system,” Singh stated.
Crime Statistics by Delhi Police
Singh noted that over 1,74,253 crimes were registered by Delhi Police in the past year, including:
- Murders: 308
- Robberies: 1,034
- House Thefts: 5,735
- Vehicle Thefts: 25,140
Despite the rising crime rates, investigation success remains low, with a mere 26% resolution rate for house theft cases.
Call for Action
Concluding his notice, Singh remarked that the current measures to ensure public safety have been insufficient.
“This makes it clear that the existing measures have failed to ensure public safety,” he wrote, calling for immediate and effective action to address the issue
