New Delhi [India], January 30 : Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders are scheduled to visit the BJP headquarters on Thursday, where they plan to present samples of contaminated Yamuna water sourced from Haryana. AAP has claimed that the water flowing from Haryana contains ammonia levels of 7 parts per million (ppm), which they assert is harmful to public health.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has responded to AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal’s serious allegations of Yamuna water poisoning, which he likened to an act of war. The Commission has given Kejriwal another opportunity to justify why action should not be taken for making such claims, which it views as potentially fostering disharmony and public unrest.
The ECI has asked Kejriwal to separate the issue of increased ammonia levels in the Yamuna from his allegations of poisoning and to provide factual evidence on the nature, quantity, and method of the alleged poisoning. The Commission has requested detailed responses regarding the detection of the alleged poison by Delhi Jal Board engineers, including specifics on location and methodology, by Friday at 11 am. Failure to do so will result in appropriate action.
The ECI emphasized that ensuring the availability of clean water is a governance issue, and all relevant authorities should prioritize securing safe water for the public. It also stated that the Commission would refrain from getting involved in long-standing water-sharing and pollution disputes, especially those governed by Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal agreements, during the brief election period.
In response to the Election Commission’s notice, Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday reiterated his allegations against the BJP government in Haryana, accusing them of poisoning the Yamuna water flowing into Delhi.
