New Delhi [India], April 3: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh strongly opposed the Waqf Amendment Bill, calling it unconstitutional and a move to incite disputes in the country. Singh reiterated that AAP would oppose the bill in the Rajya Sabha as well.
Union Minister JP Nadda is set to table the bill in the Upper House, where discussions are scheduled for 1 PM. “We opposed this bill in the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) and protested in the Lok Sabha. Today, when it comes to Rajya Sabha, we will oppose it again,” Singh told ANI.
Meanwhile, Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi criticized the bill, calling it a “brazen assault on the Constitution” and a part of the BJP’s strategy to keep society “permanently polarized.” She also condemned the government’s alleged suppression of Opposition voices in Parliament.
Congress MP Kiran Kumar Chamala called it a “dark day” as the bill was passed post-midnight, alleging that it unfairly targets the Muslim community. “This is not democracy. It could only be passed due to Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar siding with the NDA,” he claimed.
The Lok Sabha passed the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 after a heated debate, with 288 MPs voting in favor and 232 against. The government stated that the bill aims to improve the administration and management of Waqf properties by increasing transparency, enhancing registration processes, and integrating technology into Waqf record management.
