AAP Accepts Mandate, Vows to be a “Constructive Opposition” in Delhi

Priyanka Kakkar thanks voters, BJP gears up to form new government after AAP’s defeat

New Delhi, February 9:

Following AAP’s defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections, party spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar expressed gratitude to voters for their support over the past decade and assured that AAP will continue to serve as a “constructive opposition.”

Speaking to the media, Kakkar acknowledged the electoral mandate in favor of BJP and expressed hope that the new government would work for the people.

“We are very grateful that the people of Delhi gave us the opportunity to work for them for 10 years, and we did work. We also accept the people’s mandate with all humility and hope that BJP will work for the people. We will continue to play the role of constructive Opposition,” Kakkar stated.

BJP Set to Form Government as Delhi Assembly Gets Dissolved

Meanwhile, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena formally dissolved the Seventh Legislative Assembly of Delhi on Sunday, paving the way for BJP to form the next government.

The move came after Atishi tendered her resignation as Delhi Chief Minister, following AAP’s massive electoral setback.

“In exercise of the power conferred upon me by sub-section (2)(b) of section 6 of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991, I, Vinai Kumar Saxena, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, hereby dissolve the Seventh Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi with effect from February 8, 2025,” the LG’s order stated.

Atishi, who served as Delhi CM since September 2024, stepped into the role after Arvind Kejriwal resigned from the post. She became the third woman CM of Delhi, following Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit.

BJP’s Historic Win: AAP Suffers Massive Defeat

BJP won a historic mandate, securing a two-thirds majority with 48 out of 70 seats, bringing an end to AAP’s decade-long rule. AAP, which had won 62 seats in 2020, saw its numbers drop to just 22.

Atishi, however, managed to retain her Kalkaji seat, defeating BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri by a margin of 3,521 votes. Her victory was one of the few bright spots for AAP, as several top leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal and ex-Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, suffered shocking defeats.

In a major upset, BJP’s Parvesh Verma defeated Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat by over 4,000 votes, emerging as a giant-killer in the election.

Meanwhile, the Congress, hoping for a revival, failed to win a single seat, marking its third consecutive wipeout in Delhi Assembly elections.

With the BJP set to form the next government, all eyes are now on who will take the CM’s chair and how Delhi’s political landscape will shape up in the coming years.
