Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 14: After a hiatus from acting, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan is all set to make his return to the big screen with Sitaare Zameen Par. The film, described as a spiritual sequel to the 2007 classic Taare Zameen Par, has sparked widespread conversation online following the release of its trailer on Tuesday.
While some viewers praised the emotional and uplifting tone of the movie, others quickly pointed out striking “frame-by-frame” similarities between Sitaare Zameen Par and Champions, a 2023 American sports comedy, which itself is a remake of the Spanish film Campeones.
In the trailer, Aamir Khan takes on the role of a basketball coach mentoring a group of individuals with intellectual disabilities. However, the apparent resemblance to Champions has triggered criticism, with netizens accusing the film of lacking originality.
“Aamir Khan copied scenes frame-by-frame from Champions,” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Another comment read, “Sitaare Zameen Par is already facing backlash. It’s not original—it’s a copy of Champions. We saw what happened with Laal Singh Chaddha. Aamir Khan is repeating the same mistake.”
Directed by Prasanna and featuring Genelia Deshmukh in a key role, the makers of the film have not officially clarified whether Sitaare Zameen Par is a remake of the Spanish hit. Fans, however, are hopeful that the film will mark a successful comeback for Khan after the lukewarm reception of Laal Singh Chaddha, a remake of Forrest Gump.
Sitaare Zameen Par is scheduled to release in theatres on June 20.
