The Ma Ying-jeou Foundation may face penalties following a controversial remark made by a Chinese student during an exchange event, according to Taiwanese Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Minister Chiu Chui-cheng, as reported by the Taipei Times.
During the event, a student from China’s Fudan University congratulated the “China, Taipei” team on their victory in the Premier12 baseball championship in Tokyo. The comment has sparked criticism for being offensive and demeaning to Taiwan.
Lawmakers raised concerns during a meeting of the Internal Administration Committee about whether the remarks violated regulations for Chinese visitors to Taiwan. According to Minister Chiu, the comment likely contravened the Regulations on Permission for Entrance of People of the Mainland Area Into the Taiwan Area.
“The comments hurt the feelings of Taiwanese and belittled Taiwan are unacceptable to the people of Taiwan,” Chiu said, as quoted by the Taipei Times.
Additionally, Chiu noted that the foundation might have violated its agreement with the government, which prohibits political speech or propaganda during visits by Chinese groups. He indicated that administrative actions would be taken once the delegation returned to China.
Potential Penalties
- For the student: Stricter evaluations for future visits to Taiwan, with potential bans ranging from one to five years.
- For the foundation: Possible restrictions on inviting other groups, lasting between six months and five years, depending on the severity of the case.
Minister Chiu emphasized the importance of respecting Taiwanese sovereignty and preventing politically charged activities during cross-strait exchanges.
