India’s leading low-cost carrier IndiGo has announced the appointment of former British Airways chief Willie Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer, following the unexpected resignation of Pieter Elbers.
Walsh, a globally recognised aviation leader, currently serves as Director General of the International Air Transport Association. He has previously led major airline groups including International Airlines Group, which owns carriers such as Aer Lingus, Iberia, and Vueling.
Leadership Transition at IndiGo
Announcing the appointment, IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta praised Walsh’s extensive experience, calling him an ideal choice to steer the airline through a competitive and rapidly evolving global aviation landscape.
Walsh also expressed enthusiasm about taking on the role, highlighting IndiGo’s strong foundation, workforce, and growth potential in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.
Exit of Pieter Elbers
The leadership change comes weeks after Pieter Elbers stepped down nearly 18 months before the end of his term. His resignation followed operational challenges, including widespread flight cancellations in December 2025 linked to pilot shortages and regulatory duty time limits.
New Chapter Ahead
With Walsh at the helm, IndiGo is expected to focus on operational stability, global expansion, and long-term growth, as it navigates increasing competition and evolving passenger demands in both domestic and international markets.
