Palau President Stands Firm Against Chinese Pressure, Reaffirms Ties With Taiwan

Taipei [Taiwan]: Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. has issued a strong rebuke against China’s attempts to undermine his country’s sovereignty, urging Beijing to respect international law and abandon coercive tactics. His remarks precede a high-profile visit by Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te to Palau, an engagement that has drawn Beijing’s ire, according to Radio Free Asia.

Support for Taiwan Amid Beijing’s Pressure

Whipps reaffirmed Palau’s enduring partnership with Taiwan, emphasizing the 25-year diplomatic bond that has withstood external pressures.
“China needs to understand that they should respect our sovereignty and our decision to choose who our friends are. You don’t build friendships through intimidation and force,” he stated.

Allegations Against China’s Actions

Whipps accused Beijing of hostile activities, including orchestrating a large-scale cyberattack earlier this year that compromised over 20,000 documents from Palau. Additionally, he revealed illegal incursions by Chinese research vessels into Palau’s exclusive economic zone last month, calling these actions a “blatant disregard for international boundaries and the rule of law.”

Palau’s Strategic Role in Geopolitics

Positioned strategically in the Pacific, Palau is at the crossroads of escalating tensions between China and the West. The United States has ramped up its military presence in the region, with plans to install over-the-horizon radar systems and upgrade a WWII-era runway as part of efforts to counter China’s assertiveness.

Whipps also criticized China’s September test-firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean, labeling it a “clear violation of decency and respect for nations.”

Hopes for Strengthened Taiwan-Palau Relations

Despite Beijing’s opposition, Whipps expressed optimism about President Lai’s visit, focusing on enhanced economic cooperation in areas such as tourism, agriculture, and renewable energy.
“We see this visit as an opportunity to deepen our economic and diplomatic partnership with Taiwan, fostering mutual growth and upholding shared values of sovereignty and respect,” he added.

Conclusion

As China intensifies its campaign against Taiwan, Palau remains steadfast in defending its sovereignty and its right to maintain ties with Taipei, positioning itself as a critical player in the Pacific’s geopolitical landscape.
