Congress leader Meem Afzal expressed optimism that the long-awaited cabinet expansion in Jharkhand would be finalized before December 9. This follows discussions between the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress.
“The discussion between the leaders (JMM and Congress) will take place in the next one or two days, as it was delayed due to the weekend and the Parliament session. It should be done before December 9,” Afzal said. He clarified that the Congress party has no additional demands, stating, “It is already clear.”
Progress on Cabinet Formation
Jharkhand Congress President Keshav Mahto Kamlesh echoed similar sentiments, assuring that a decision on the cabinet expansion would be made soon. “You will witness (the cabinet expansion) and will very soon get information on every issue,” a JMM leader added, dispelling rumors of discord within the alliance.
Congress leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir emphasized the ongoing collaboration with JMM, saying, “In two to three days, the cabinet berths of the Jharkhand government will be announced. We (Congress) will hold discussions with JMM and decide on the cabinet berths.”
Mir also highlighted the alliance’s success in securing a strong mandate despite initial challenges. “First, questions were raised on the distribution of tickets, followed by the distribution of seats. But we said the alliance would get a better mandate, and the results are in front of you,” he said.
JMM’s Victory and Current Standing
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who assumed office for a second consecutive term on November 28, leads the JMM. The party spearheaded the INDIA bloc to victory, securing 56 out of 81 assembly seats.
- JMM: 34 seats
- Congress: 16 seats
- RJD: 4 seats
- CPI-ML: 2 seats
The BJP-led NDA managed only 24 seats, with the BJP winning 21 and allies securing three.
The cabinet expansion is anticipated to strengthen the ruling alliance and set the groundwork for effective governance.
