Ishan Kishan Likely To Lead Sunrisers Hyderabad At Start Of IPL 2026 Amid Pat Cummins Injury Uncertainty

Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan is reportedly the leading candidate to captain Sunrisers Hyderabad at the start of the **Indian Premier League> 2026 season, with uncertainty surrounding the fitness of current skipper Pat Cummins.

According to a report by the The Times of India, the Sunrisers Hyderabad management has already discussed the matter internally. The discussions reportedly concluded that Kishan would be the “most suitable candidate” to lead the team if Cummins is unavailable at the beginning of the tournament.

Cummins sustained a serious injury during the The Ashes 2025–26 series and has not played competitive cricket since then. The franchise is reportedly unsure about the Australian fast bowler’s return timeline, prompting the team to consider a temporary captain for the initial phase of the season.


Strong T20 World Cup Campaign Boosts Kishan’s Leadership Prospects

Kishan’s impressive performances in the **ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 have strengthened his case for leadership responsibilities.

The Indian batter played a key role in the team’s successful campaign and emerged as India’s second-highest run-scorer in the tournament. One of the highlights of his run was a crucial half-century in the final against New Zealand national cricket team.

He also earned two Player of the Match awards during the tournament for his standout performances against Namibia national cricket team and arch-rivals Pakistan national cricket team.


Domestic Cricket Success Paved the Way for Comeback

Before his return to the national team, Kishan impressed in domestic cricket during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he captained Jharkhand cricket team to their maiden title.

The left-handed batter had a remarkable tournament, scoring 517 runs in 10 innings, including two centuries and two half-centuries. His leadership and batting performances were instrumental in Jharkhand’s historic victory.

Kishan’s domestic success marked a strong comeback after he was dropped from the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s central contract list in 2024 due to concerns over his commitment to domestic cricket.

Following India’s T20 World Cup triumph, Kishan expressed pride in the team’s achievement and hoped his journey would inspire young cricketers across the country.

“Our team won, which is a very good thing not only for us but for the whole nation. We hope to continue playing cricket like this and keep winning,” Kishan said while speaking to the media.

Reflecting on his comeback journey, he said consistent performances can motivate aspiring cricketers.

“It feels great because I believe the better I perform, the more motivation it will be for young kids who want to grow. I always try to ensure players emerge from every corner. Now that we’ve played the World Cup, it shows that with hard work, you can succeed from anywhere,” he added.
