Chennai (Tamil Nadu): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has criticized the Central government for not allowing discussions in Parliament about the severe impact of Cyclone Fengal, which has caused widespread destruction across the state.
Speaking to reporters, CM Stalin expressed disappointment, saying, “In Parliament, MPs were not allowed to speak about Cyclone Fengal. As part of our responsibility, we are assessing the damages and will send a report. It is their responsibility to respond, but they are refusing to do so. Despite this, we are doing our best.”
The Chief Minister also addressed accusations from the Leader of the Opposition, Edappadi K Palaniswami of the AIADMK. Stalin countered by emphasizing the effectiveness of his government’s welfare schemes and suggesting that the public recognizes their value.
Relief and Rescue Efforts
CM Stalin praised the dedication of relief teams, district officers, and ministers working tirelessly amid flooding and heavy rains triggered by the cyclone.
- Rescue Operations:
- 18 rescue teams comprising 493 personnel are actively conducting relief operations.
- In Villupuram district, 15 teams, including members of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), are engaged in relief work.
- Additional teams are deployed in Cuddalore and Tiruvannamalai districts, with specialized IIT engineers assisting at landslide-affected areas.
- Relief Camps:
- 147 relief camps are currently housing 7,776 people. The camps are equipped with water, food, and medical supplies to cater to displaced residents.
The Chief Minister assured that those affected by the cyclone would receive compensation for losses, including damage to livestock, homes, and lives.
On-Ground Assessment and Public Assurance
CM Stalin personally visited the worst-hit districts, including Viluppuram and Kallakurichi, to inspect the damage and meet affected residents. “I am monitoring the situation to ensure that normalcy is restored promptly,” he said, adding that the government is committed to ensuring comprehensive relief and rehabilitation.
Impact of Cyclone Fengal
Cyclone Fengal made landfall on November 30, causing heavy rainfall and severe flooding across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The disaster has left many districts inundated, with significant damage to infrastructure and property. Rescue operations continue to evacuate and support those stranded.
Despite the challenges, the state government remains steadfast in its relief efforts, ensuring aid reaches all affected areas.
