The killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint US-Israeli strikes has triggered a political storm in India, with Opposition parties accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of maintaining a “deafening silence” on the issue.
The Congress alleged that the Modi government’s response amounts to an “abdication of moral leadership.” Party spokesperson Pawan Khera said the Centre’s silence reflects reluctance to criticise the United States and Israel. “India has never before looked this weak,” he wrote on X.
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also attacked the government, questioning India’s foreign policy stance under what he called the “self-styled Vishwaguru.” He flagged the timing of Modi’s recent visit to Israel, just days before the strikes on Iran.
Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party urged the government to clarify its diplomatic position and outline efforts to restore peace. Meanwhile, Sanjay Singh of the Aam Aadmi Party criticised the Prime Minister in sharp terms, demanding a clear statement on the conflict.
Protests were reported in Lucknow, parts of Kashmir, and Hyderabad, particularly among members of the Shia Muslim community.
The Centre has not yet issued a detailed public statement on Khamenei’s assassination, even as global reactions continue to pour in.
