India on Saturday expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions in West Asia following coordinated US-Israeli strikes on Iran, urging all sides to exercise restraint and prioritise civilian safety.
In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said India was closely monitoring the situation in Iran and the wider Gulf region.
“India is deeply concerned at the recent developments in Iran and the Gulf region. We urge all sides to exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritise the safety of civilians,” the statement read.
The MEA emphasised the need for diplomacy over military action. “Dialogue and diplomacy should be pursued to de-escalate tensions and address underlying issues. Sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states must be respected,” it added.
Focus on Indian Nationals in the Region
With tensions spilling across the region and reports of Iranian counter-attacks targeting US bases near major cities, concerns have mounted about the safety of Indian nationals living and working in West Asia.
The MEA confirmed that Indian missions in affected countries are actively coordinating with citizens on the ground.
“Our Missions in the region are in touch with Indian nationals and have issued appropriate advisories asking them to remain vigilant, stay in contact with the Missions, and follow local security guidance,” the ministry said.
As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding evacuation plans. However, the situation remains fluid, with much of the Middle East/West Asia airspace closed due to ongoing military activity involving fighter jets, missiles and drones.
India has a significant diaspora presence in the region — over 90 lakh Indians reside across Middle Eastern countries, with the largest population in the UAE. Approximately 10,000 Indians are currently in Iran.
Civil Aviation Ministry Reviews Preparedness
Amid widespread airspace disruptions, the Ministry of Civil Aviation held a high-level review meeting to assess preparedness and response mechanisms.
According to a press release issued Saturday, Minister K Ram Mohan undertook a comprehensive review with all relevant stakeholders to evaluate the impact on international air operations.
“Airports across the country, particularly major international gateways, have been placed on operational alert to manage potential flight diversions, unscheduled landings and passenger facilitation requirements,” the ministry stated.
The government is preparing for possible rerouting of flights and increased operational strain if international carriers divert services away from conflict zones.
Airlines Suspend Middle East Operations
India’s two largest carriers, Air India and IndiGo, have already suspended flights to and from several Middle Eastern destinations in view of the deteriorating security situation and airspace restrictions.
The civil aviation ministry said it is coordinating closely with the MEA to ensure seamless communication and quick response if emergent assistance is required for Indian carriers or nationals abroad.
“The ministry is also in close touch with the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure seamless information flow and appropriate coordination in case of any emergent requirements involving Indian carriers or Indian nationals abroad,” the statement added.
Airlines operating international routes have been directed to strictly follow global safety protocols.
“Indian carriers operating international services have been advised to continuously monitor airspace advisories, NOTAMs (Notice to Air Missions), and route restrictions issued by the concerned authorities,” the release said.
Carriers have also been instructed to implement timely rerouting or diversion of flights wherever necessary, in line with established contingency planning procedures.
Rising Regional Uncertainty
The latest developments have intensified geopolitical tensions in an already volatile region, raising concerns about prolonged disruptions to travel, trade and expatriate safety.
With airspace closures and military activity continuing across parts of West Asia, Indian authorities remain on high alert, balancing diplomatic caution with logistical preparedness to protect the country’s interests and citizens abroad.
