TUCSON, ARIZONA – In a significant update to the search for missing 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department has officially cleared all members of the Guthrie family—including spouses—of any involvement in her disappearance.
Sheriff Chris Nanos issued a firm statement on Monday, February 16, seeking to put an end to the intense public scrutiny that has followed the family of the beloved Tucson resident. Among those cleared are Nancy’s children, including Today show host Savannah Guthrie, her siblings Annie and Camron, and Annie’s husband, Tommaso Cioni.
“The Guthrie family—to include all siblings and spouses—has been cleared as possible suspects in this case,” Sheriff Nanos stated. “The family has been nothing but cooperative and gracious. To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, it is cruel. The Guthrie family are victims, plain and simple.”
Refuting the “Prime Suspect” Narrative
The Sheriff’s defense comes after media personality Ashleigh Banfield recently speculated that Tommaso Cioni could be a “prime suspect.” Cioni was the last person known to have seen Nancy before she vanished, having had dinner with her and Annie on the evening of January 31.
According to authorities, Cioni last saw Nancy at approximately 9:45 PM that Saturday. She was reported missing the following morning when she failed to show up at a friend’s house for their weekly tradition of watching Sunday church services together.
Sheriff Nanos has been adamant about protecting the family from further “re-victimization.” When asked by Fox News journalist Matt Finn if DNA evidence played a role in clearing the family, Nanos declined to specify, stating, “I will not stand quiet when they are re-victimized. It is not just my duty, it is every cop’s duty to stand up and be the voice for victims.”
The Search Continues
Despite clearing the immediate family, the investigation remains in a critical phase. No new suspects have been named, and the community has been on edge as police canvass the Tucson neighborhood where Nancy’s daughter resides.
A makeshift memorial has already begun to grow outside Nancy’s residence, where locals have gathered to pay their respects and offer prayers for her safe return. The case has also sparked side-discussions regarding the criminal history of individuals in the family’s wider circle, including Tommaso Cioni’s bandmate, Dominic Evans, though police have not officially linked those details to Nancy’s disappearance.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department continues to urge anyone with information to come forward as they piece together the final hours before Nancy Guthrie went missing.
