Jason Holder Becomes First West Indies Bowler To Reach 100 T20I Wickets As Romario Shepherd Stars Vs Scotland

Veteran West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder etched his name in the record books on Saturday by becoming the first bowler from his country to take 100 wickets in T20 Internationals. Holder reached the landmark during West Indies’ ICC T20 World Cup opening match against Scotland, where he delivered an impressive spell of 3/30 in 3.5 overs.

With this performance, Holder now has 101 wickets in 90 T20I matches at an average of 27.17 and an economy rate of 8.79. His record includes four four-wicket hauls and one five-wicket haul, with best figures of 5/27. Akael Hosein and Romario Shepherd follow him on the West Indies T20I wicket-takers list, with Hosein taking 86 wickets in 91 matches and Shepherd claiming 80 wickets in 75 games. Shepherd’s latest performance also saw him surpass legendary Dwayne Bravo, who ended his T20I career with 78 wickets.

Romario Shepherd delivered a sensational bowling performance while defending 183, finishing with figures of 5/20 in just three overs. During his 17th over, Shepherd dismissed Matthew Cross, Michael Leask and Oliver Davidson to complete a hat-trick, before removing Safyaan Sharif to take four wickets in the over. This marked his second T20I hat-trick, making him the fourth bowler among Test-playing nations to achieve two hat-tricks in the format, alongside Lasith Malinga, Pat Cummins and Tim Southee.

Shepherd also became the second West Indies bowler to take a five-wicket haul in T20 World Cup history, after Akael Hosein’s 5/11 against Uganda in the 2024 edition. West Indies’ other T20I hat-trick takers include Jason Holder (against England in Bridgetown in 2022) and Shamar Springer (against Afghanistan in Dubai in 2026).

Earlier in the match, Scotland won the toss and opted to bowl first. West Indies made a solid start with Brandon King scoring 35 off 30 balls and captain Shai Hope adding 19. After slipping to 58/2, Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell stabilized the innings with an 81-run partnership for the third wicket. Powell scored 24 off 14 balls, hitting four boundaries and two sixes. Romario Shepherd and Matthew Forde remained unbeaten as West Indies posted a competitive total of 182/5 in their 20 overs. Brad Currie was the standout bowler for Scotland with figures of 2/23.

In reply, Scotland’s chase began poorly as they slumped to 37/3 in 5.4 overs. Captain Richie Berrington (42 off 24 balls) and Tom Bruce (35 off 28 balls) revived the innings with a 78-run partnership. However, Scotland collapsed from 115/3 to 147 all out in 18.5 overs. Shepherd and Holder were the chief destroyers with figures of 5/20 and 3/35 respectively, sealing a convincing victory for West Indies.
