Akhilesh Yadav Slams India-US Trade Agreement Over Religious and Economic Concerns

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav launched a scathing attack on the Central government on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, over the newly announced India-US trade deal. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Yadav labeled the agreement a “surrender” of Indian markets and raised unique concerns regarding its impact on religious traditions and national sovereignty.

The “Sanatani” Concerns and Dairy Imports

Yadav’s most provocative argument focused on the potential influx of American dairy and agricultural products. He suggested that US-made goods might not adhere to the dietary and processing standards required for Hindu religious practices.

  • Religious Fasting: He questioned how “Sanatanis” (practitioners of Sanatana Dharma) would maintain their fasting rituals if they were forced to consume imported US dairy products that don’t meet traditional standards.
  • The “Dheel” Remark: Playing on words, he called the deal a “dheel” (relaxation/loosening), alleging the government has loosened its grip on national interests to appease Washington.

Political Friction Over China and Market Loss

Beyond the trade deal, Yadav used the opportunity to challenge the BJP’s stance on national security and its silence on border tensions.

  • The China Question: Defending Rahul Gandhi’s recent comments, Yadav demanded a transparent debate in Parliament regarding India’s relations with China and the reported loss of territory.
  • Economic Impact: He noted that India is losing both land and market share to China, accusing the current regime of failing to protect domestic industries while opening doors to the US.
  • Swadeshi Silence: Yadav took a dig at the BJP’s allies, asking why those who once championed “Swadeshi” (self-reliance) are now silent on a deal that could purchase $500 billion in American energy and technology.

Parliament Under Siege

The remarks came during a chaotic day in the Budget Session 2026, characterized by:

  • Opposition Protests: Suspended MPs gathered outside the Parliament gates with placards reading “PM is compromised.”
  • Government Defense: Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal maintained that the interests of Indian farmers and the dairy sector remain “completely protected” despite US claims of zero-tariff access.
