Noida: Classes Up to Grade 8 Shut Until Jan 15 Due to Severe Cold

In response to the intensifying cold wave and hazardous fog conditions across the National Capital Region (NCR), the Gautam Buddh Nagar district administration has extended the closure of all schools for students from Nursery to Class 8 until January 15, 2026.

The official order, issued on Sunday, January 11, by Basic Education Officer Rahul Panwar, follows direct instructions from the District Magistrate. The measure is designed to protect young students from the health risks associated with sub-10°C temperatures and the lack of visibility during early morning hours.

Scope of the Closure

The directive is mandatory for all educational institutions operating within Noida and Greater Noida, regardless of their board affiliation:

  • Boards Included: CBSE, ICSE, IB, UP State Board, and all other recognized boards.
  • Class Range: Nursery, Kindergarten, and Classes 1 through 8.
  • Duration: Effective immediately, with schools scheduled to remain shut through Wednesday, January 15.

The administration has warned that any school found conducting physical classes for these grades during the prohibited period will face strict legal action, which could include the cancellation of the institution’s recognition.

Weather Outlook: Biting Cold to Persist

The decision comes as North India grapples with a persistent cold spell. While a recent western disturbance brought light rain and temporary relief, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a return of harsher conditions.

Jan 136°C19°CClear & Chilly
Jan 147°C18°CEarly Morning Fog

“The health and safety of children are our top priority,” Rahul Panwar stated. “Dense fog poses a significant risk for school transport, and the biting north-westerly winds are expected to continue for the next few days.”

Guidelines for Parents and Staff

  • Higher Classes: For students in Class 9 to 12, schools may continue to operate, though many institutions have opted to delay start times to 10:00 AM to avoid the densest morning fog.
  • Staff Presence: The order typically applies only to students; teachers and administrative staff are generally required to report to work as per their respective school’s internal schedule unless otherwise notified.
  • Online Classes: Several private schools in Noida have already announced a shift to virtual learning platforms to ensure academic continuity during the physical closure.
