Washington: US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he is preparing to meet Colombian President Gustavo Petro at the White House “in the near future,” marking a significant turn after a period of sharp diplomatic friction between the two countries.
In a post shared on Truth Social, Trump revealed that he and the Colombian leader had a constructive phone conversation, where they discussed their recent disagreements, including issues related to drug trafficking and bilateral cooperation.
Trump said he appreciated Petro’s “tone” during the discussion and welcomed the outreach, adding that arrangements for the meeting are now being coordinated by senior officials in Washington and Bogotá.
This development comes just days after Trump issued a stern warning hinting at possible military action against Colombia, heightening geopolitical tensions in the region. The planned meeting now signals a potential shift toward dialogue and diplomatic engagement, easing concerns over escalating hostilities.
Trump emphasized that he is looking forward to the meeting, hinting at renewed cooperation and efforts to address key concerns impacting both nations.
