Strong 6.2-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Japan’s Chugoku Region

Tokyo: A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 magnitude struck Japan’s western Chugoku region on Tuesday, shaking parts of Shimane prefecture and surrounding areas, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) confirmed. The tremor was followed by a series of sizeable aftershocks, heightening concern among residents.

According to JMA, the epicentre was located in eastern Shimane prefecture. Despite the strength of the quake, the agency confirmed that there is no risk of a tsunami.

The region is home to the Shimane Nuclear Power Station, operated by Chugoku Electric Power, located about 32 kilometres (20 miles) from the quake’s centre. Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority assured that there were no abnormalities reported at the facility.

A spokesperson for Chugoku Electric said detailed inspections were underway to assess any potential impact, particularly on the No.2 reactor unit, which resumed operations in December 2024 after remaining offline since the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Japan experiences frequent seismic activity, as it sits on one of the world’s most active tectonic zones. Tuesday’s quake serves as another reminder of the country’s preparedness and strict safety monitoring systems.
