‘Not Everyone Has to Earn by Selling Chicken’: Punjab Tourism Advisor Defends Non-Veg Ban in Amritsar

Amid criticism over the Punjab government’s decision to ban the sale of non-vegetarian food in Amritsar after granting the city sacred status, Punjab Tourism and Cultural Affairs Advisor Deepak Bali has defended the move, saying it reflects respect for the city’s spiritual heritage and Sikh teachings.

Speaking to ANI on Sunday, Bali said the decision was taken in reverence to Guru Ramdas Sahib, who founded Amritsar. Emphasising the city’s religious significance, he stated that the move fulfils a long-standing sentiment within the Sikh community to preserve the sanctity of holy cities.

“Nobody is greater than our Guru Sahib. We request people not to be misled and to accept this decision with understanding,” Bali said, urging public cooperation.

Addressing concerns that the ban on non-vegetarian food could affect livelihoods, Bali remarked, “The whole world does not have to live by selling chicken. If people want to work, they will find work elsewhere. They can do business outside these areas.”

He further clarified that the decision has now been formalised into law and will be strictly enforced.

The remarks follow the Punjab government’s recent notification declaring the walled city of Amritsar, Sri Anandpur Sahib in Rupnagar district, and Talwandi Sabo (Sri Damdama Sahib) in Bathinda district as Holy Cities of the state. The notification, approved by the Governor of Punjab, mandates several restrictions to preserve religious sanctity.

Under the new directives, the Excise Department has been instructed to restrict the sale and consumption of liquor, while the Health and Family Welfare Department will prohibit cigarettes, tobacco, and other intoxicants. The Animal Husbandry Department has been asked to enforce a ban on the sale and consumption of meat within the notified limits.

District administrations and local government bodies have been directed to ensure strict implementation of these orders across the three holy cities.
