Former Union Minister and Lok Sabha Speaker Shivraj Patil Passes Away at 90

Veteran Congress leader and former Union home minister Shivraj Patil passed away at the age of 90 on Friday morning at his residence ‘Devghar’ in Latur, Maharashtra. He had been unwell for the past few days, family sources told PTI. His funeral will be held on Saturday.

Born on October 12, 1935, in Chakur village of Latur district, Patil was regarded as one of the most influential leaders in Indian politics. His political journey began as the president of the Latur municipality (1966–1970), followed by two terms as a member of the Maharashtra Assembly, during which he served as both deputy speaker and speaker (1977–1979).

Patil entered national politics in 1980 after winning the Latur Lok Sabha seat, representing the constituency in Parliament for seven consecutive terms until 2004. He served as the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996. He also held a seat in the Rajya Sabha during his political career.

Between 1980 and 1990, Patil served on the Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament, later becoming its chairperson.

During his long career, he held several key Union portfolios, including defence, commerce, and science & technology. Patil served as the Union home minister from 2004 to 2008, stepping down on November 30, 2008, in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks.

From 2010 to 2015, he served as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh.

Patil is survived by his son Shailesh Patil, daughter-in-law Archana, and two granddaughters.

Leaders Condole His Passing

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow, describing Patil as an experienced leader committed to public welfare. Modi recalled multiple interactions with him, including a recent meeting at the PM’s residence.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge remembered Patil as a statesman of great dignity who contributed significantly to India’s democratic institutions.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi described the loss as “irreparable,” noting Patil’s lifelong dedication to public service.
