The critically praised romantic drama The Girlfriend, starring Rashmika Mandanna and Dheekshith Shetty, is heading to OTT soon. Netflix India officially announced the film’s streaming premiere date on Sunday, much to the excitement of fans who missed its theatrical run earlier this month.
The film, written and directed by Rahul Ravindran, is scheduled for release on the streaming platform on December 5.
Netflix India shared the poster of the film on its Instagram account, confirming the release and the regional availability: “Meet Bhooma Devi, The Girlfriend MA Literature :). Watch The Girlfriend on Netflix out 5 December in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam.”
Plot and Critical Praise
The Girlfriend initially received positive word-of-mouth upon its theatrical release, with many critics and fans highlighting the intensity of its narrative. The story centers on what begins as a fairy tale love story between the lead couple, which gradually deteriorates into a toxic relationship due to the aggressive nature of Dheekshith Shetty’s character.
Rashmika Mandanna, who plays the character Bhooma Devi, earned widespread praise for her performance. The actress recently shared her deep connection to the role in an emotional Instagram post.
“When Rahul first narrated this script to me, I remember tearing up… there were so many moments that pinched my heart in ways I couldn’t explain,” Rashmika wrote. She added that playing Bhooma was “THE MOST SPECIAL” because she felt the character was “mostly me,” helping her understand herself better.
The film’s supporting cast includes Anu Emmanuel, Rao Ramesh, and Rohini.
