Ajit Agarkar, the BCCI’s chief selector, talked about the details of picking teams and how he sometimes disagreed with former coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma at the NDTV World Summit 2025 in New Delhi.
Agarkar, who became chairman of the selection committee in 2023, said that the main job of the selectors is to choose the best 15 players for a series. “Disagreements are good.” He stated, “It means you have more than one choice for a certain spot, and in the end, it’s up to us to decide.”
He went on to say that talking with coaches and captains, including Dravid, Rohit Sharma, and current skipper Shubman Gill, is part of the process. “We want them to be a part of the conversation. “Eventually, there will be some calls we don’t agree on, but every decision is made with the best interest of the team in mind,” Agarkar added.
Agarkar added that no decisions have been made about whether or not veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma would play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. “They are great players, but things could be different in two years.” Younger players could take their places. He said, “It’s not just about runs; it’s about winning trophies.”
Agarkar stressed that team selection is often exaggerated and that the fundamental goal is still to develop a balanced group that will help the team succeed.
