Shubman Gill Surpasses Rohit Sharma, Becomes Indian With Most Centuries In World Test Championship History

The captain of Team India, Shubman Gill On Saturday, set a milestone by becoming the Indian player with the most century in World Test Championship (WTC) history. Gill reached the milestone during the last Test of the two-match series against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. He hit an unbroken 129 runs off 196 balls, which included 16 fours and two sixes.

The 25-year-old right-hander now has 10 hundreds in the WTC, which is more than former skipper Rohit Sharma, who had nine. Gill’s most recent game brought his total number of runs in the WTC to 2,826 in 39 games, with an average of 43.47 and a strike rate of 61.36. He scored 269 runs against England earlier this year in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, which is still his highest score.

Gill Joins the Ranks of Great WTC Batters

Gill is now on a short list of players who have scored the most century in WTC history. This list includes:

Joe Root (England) has 21 centuries.

Steve Smith from Australia has 13.

Kane Williamson from New Zealand has 11

Marnus Labuschagne from Australia – 11

Root (6080 runs), Smith (4278), Labuschagne (4225), Ben Stokes (3616), and Travis Head (3300) are the top five right now. Gill Sets Another Record as Captain Gill’s century is the fifth by an Indian captain in a single calendar year. He is only the second Indian captain to do this, after Virat Kohli in 2017 and 2018. He is also one of only a few Indian hitters to achieve five or more Test centuries in a year, along with greats like Sachin Tendulkar (7 in 2010), Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, and Kohli himself. Day 2 of the India vs. West Indies match India ended their innings at 518/5 in 134.2 overs, thanks to hundreds from captain Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. In response, the West Indies openers John Campbell and Tagnarine Chanderpaul were careful at first. Their partnership ended at 21 when Ravindra Jadeja got rid of Campbell, who was trapped by Sai Sudharsan at short leg following a poorly timed sweep shot. The West Indies were 26/1 in 11 overs at Tea, with Chanderpaul (13) and Alick Athanaze (2) at the crease. They were still 492 runs behind India. India’s bowlers were Jasprit Bumrah (0/10 in 4 overs), Mohammed Siraj (0/9 in 4 overs), Jadeja (1/5 in 2 overs), and Kuldeep Yadav (0/2 in 1 over).
