There is still a lot of disagreement about the Asia Cup 2025. The newest news is that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is going to ask the ICC to take action against Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and the head of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), for his alleged bad behavior during and after the event.
The BCCI wants Naqvi to be punished and even removed as an ICC Director because he wouldn’t give the Asia Cup trophy to the Indian side, which beat Pakistan in the final on September 28.
Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister, is said to have told the ACC headquarters in Dubai to keep the trophy there and not let anyone move or show it without his permission.
A BCCI source told PTI, “It remains to be seen what will be the long-term effects for the PCB or Naqvi because the BCCI is clear he didn’t have any right to insist on handing the trophy himself to the Indian team and refusing to send it to the BCCI, who were the official hosts of the event.”
Earlier, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said that the Asia Cup trophy was “not Naqvi’s personal property” and asked for it to be sent back to India right once.
The presentation ceremony after the match got out of hand when the Indian team, lead by Suryakumar Yadav, wouldn’t accept the trophy immediately from Naqvi. This caused a delay of about an hour. The ceremony ended suddenly without a solution.
This year’s Asia Cup was especially heated because it was the first time India and Pakistan had played each other on the pitch after the Pahalgam terror assault and Operation Sindoor. There were a lot of heated arguments between players from both teams during the competition. For example, during the Super 4 stage, Haris Rauf, Abhishek Sharma, and Shubman Gill got into a fight.
Naqvi’s time as chair of the ACC has also been tainted by political comments aimed at India. Reports say that things became worse at the ACC’s post-tournament meeting when Naqvi got into a fight with BCCI representatives Rajeev Shukla and Ashish Shelar. Naqvi is said to have continued to avoid talking about the trophy, even after Shelar repeatedly urged him to congratulate India on their success.
The Asia Cup trophy should have already been sent to the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, but Naqvi has refused to let it go. Instead, he is said to have said that the captain of India must go to Dubai to get the trophy himself, which the BCCI sees as unprofessional behavior.
The continuous fight between the cricket boards shows how the relations between the two countries are getting worse, reaching beyond the field and into the offices of international cricket.
