NEW DELHI – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) gave a full weather report on Wednesday that warned several parts of the country to expect heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds. Most of the warnings are for Peninsular India, sections of Central and Eastern India, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Southern India is under Yellow and Orange Alerts.
The IMD has put several states in southern India under its color-coded alert system because of the severe rain that has been falling there.
Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala are all under an IMD weather alert for heavy rain, high winds, and thunderstorms. Several districts in Telangana, including Adilabad, Kumaram Bheem, Nirmal, and Nizamabad, have been put on an orange alert, which is the third level in the four-tier system and means “be prepared.” The rest of the state, including the capital city of Hyderabad, is still on a yellow alert.
Tamil Nadu: A yellow alert is in effect for almost all of the state, including Chennai, because of heavy to extremely heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds. But Mayiladuthurai, Karaikal, Nagapattinam, and Thiruvavur are not currently under any alerts for rain.
Parts of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, have also been getting a lot of rain. Most of the IMD’s districts are under a yellow alert because the weather is expected to be overcast and windy.
Other Areas on Watch
The weather warnings don’t just apply to the southern peninsula. The IMD’s district-wise warning system says that heavy rain and thunderstorms are also anticipated in:
Western India: Some areas of Maharashtra in the west.
East India: Parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
North-East India: Several states in the North-East are also likely to see a lot of rain.
Islands of Andaman and Nicobar
All of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are on a yellow warning for heavy rain. Andhra Pradesh is expected to have rain and thunderstorms until September 14. Kerala and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, on the other hand, may see clearer sky starting September 12.
The IMD’s four-tier system—Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red—gives clear and useful information about how bad the weather is. When there is a yellow alert, it means that people should “be aware” of the chance of really terrible weather that could stop them from doing their normal activities. An orange notice, which is more serious than a yellow alert, tells residents to “be prepared” for very heavy rain and possible damage, such as road, rail, or power outages.
People who live in the areas that have been affected should keep an eye on the weather forecasts and take the steps necessary to stay safe.
