PM Modi, Zelenskyy Discuss Path to “Peaceful Settlement” in Ukraine

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked over the phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday. Modi said again that India has always believed that the problem should be settled peacefully. He had the talk when Prime Minister Modi arrived in Tianjin, China, for the annual Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) session. This was his first trip to China since 2018.

President Zelenskyy talked about what he thinks about what’s been going on in Ukraine lately, according to an official statement. PM Modi thanked him and added that India’s “steadfast and consistent position for a peaceful settlement of the conflict and support for efforts aimed at the earliest restoration of peace.” The two leaders also talked about how their partnership was progressing and how they could work together more in areas where they both had an interest.

The call came just a few days after Prime Minister Modi called to Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Trump met with President Putin in Alaska to discuss about the war in Ukraine. There was a lot of high-level diplomatic activity going on at the time of the call. This shows that India is still trying hard to be a big part of efforts to keep the peace around the world. The two leaders have promised to keep in touch, and they plan to meet in person at the UN General Assembly in September.
