Yamuna River Rises Above Warning Mark In Delhi, Flood Alert Issued

New Delhi: The water level of the Yamuna River in Delhi has risen to 204.61 meters at the Old Railway Bridge, remaining above the warning mark of 204.50 meters for the second consecutive day. Officials are on high alert as the Central Water Commission (CWC) has issued a flood warning, with the river likely to cross the danger mark of 205.3 meters by Wednesday evening.

The continuous rise in water level is primarily due to the heavy volume of water being released from the upstream Wazirabad and Hathnikund barrages. According to the flood control department, a substantial amount of water—around 37,230 cusecs from Wazirabad and 52,448 cusecs from Hathnikund—is being released into the river every hour. Water released from these barrages typically takes 48 to 50 hours to reach Delhi.

Authorities have advised residents in low-lying areas near the river embankments to remain vigilant and are making preparations for potential evacuations. The Old Railway Bridge is a critical observation point for tracking the river’s flow and potential flood risks. The CWC forecast indicates that the water level may increase further, raising concerns for communities residing along the river’s floodplains.
