JAMMU & KASHMIR – SRINAGAR On Monday, August 4, 2025, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah posted something mysterious on the social media site X. He said he was hopeful for “something positive” for the Union Territory during the current Monsoon Session of Parliament. He did, however, downplay hopes for any big news on Tuesday, August 5.
Abdullah’s post on X said, “I’ve heard every possible combination and permutation of what to expect in J&K tomorrow, so let me stick my neck out and say nothing will happen tomorrow. Luckily, nothing bad will happen, but unfortunately, nothing good will happen either.” I still think that something good will happen for J&K during this monsoon session of Parliament, but not tomorrow.
The Chief Minister said that his comments were based on a “gut feeling” and that he had not talked directly with leaders in Delhi.
Buzz About Bringing Back Statehood
Omar Abdullah didn’t say exactly what he meant, but his remark comes at a time when there is a lot of talk about Jammu and Kashmir getting its statehood back. After separate talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu and then Home Minister Amit Shah and President Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday, August 3, this buzz grew a lot. The public and the media were not told what happened at these high-level meetings, which made people even more curious.
The fact that these discussions happened just a few days before August 5, the sixth anniversary of the end of Article 370, has fueled rumors. Home Minister Amit Shah said on August 5, 2019, that Article 370, which gave Jammu and Kashmir special status and autonomy, will be repealed. The former state would then be split into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The Political Scene After Abrogation
The Election Commission of India held assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir in September and October 2024, years after Article 370 was repealed. The results, which were announced on October 8, 2024, showed that the National Conference and Congress alliance (part of the INDIA bloc) won 49 out of 90 seats, giving them an absolute majority. The National Conference won the most seats, with 42, while the Congress got 6. After this success, Omar Abdullah became the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir.
The National Conference and the Congress have both repeatedly called for Jammu and Kashmir to be given back its statehood. This is a top priority for the incoming government. Since August 1, the Congress has stepped up its calls for the restoration of statehood. On August 5, they called it a “black day” to counter the BJP’s story about the repeal of Article 370.
The Supreme Court’s December 2023 decision to sustain the repeal of Article 370 ordered the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood “at the earliest” and “as soon as possible.” The central government had promised the court that it would fulfill this order.
During the Monsoon Session, everyone will be watching Parliament for any new laws that could affect the political destiny of Jammu and Kashmir.
