Washington, D.C.: Donald Trump has been trying to win the Nobel Peace Prize for a long time, and now his administration is making a public campaign for the award. Karoline Leavitt, the White House Press Secretary, said recently that it’s “well past time” for President Trump to get the prize. She pointed to a number of international disputes he is said to have helped resolve.
Leavitt said during a news briefing that Trump had “brokered, on average, one peace deal or ceasefire per month” since he took office in January. She talked about the truce between India and Pakistan, which came after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam and India’s “Operation Sindoor” response. The Indian administration, on the other hand, has strongly denied this accusation, saying that all problems with Pakistan are dealt with directly between the two countries without any outside help.
It’s not new that people want Trump to win the prize. He has often said that he “deserves it,” like Barack Obama, who won the honor less than a year after he became president. This preoccupation, as several experts have remarked, is exacerbated by a long-standing rivalry with Obama.
Several leaders have also applauded Trump’s nomination for the 2025 prize. Pakistan has put his name forward after he met with their army chief, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also backed the proposal. Leavitt said that Trump’s efforts to make peace in other wars include those between Cambodia and Thailand, Egypt and Ethiopia, Rwanda and the DR Congo, and Serbia and Kosovo. The press secretary even said that Trump’s ordered strikes on Iranian nuclear sites were a step toward world peace. However, he has not kept his vow to terminate the Russia-Ukraine war on “day one” of his tenure.
There are tens of thousands of people who can nominate someone for the Nobel Peace Prize. These include parliamentarians and past winners. Trump has been nominated for the honor several times, including by an Israeli-American academic who praised his “strategic brilliance.” However, other people have criticized him for being too needy about the award.
So far, four U.S. presidents have won the prize: Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter, and Barack Obama. On October 10, we should find out who won this year.
