Bengaluru, Karnataka | July 30, 2025: Kannada actor-filmmaker Raj B Shetty, known for his critically acclaimed works like Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana and Toby, has struck gold with his latest production, the horror-comedy Su From So. Directed by debutant JP Thuminad, the film, which premiered on July 25, 2025, has swiftly become the highest-grossing Kannada film of the year within just five days of its release.
Su From So banked heavily on word-of-mouth publicity generated from its paid premieres, a strategy that has paid off handsomely. The film has been garnering rave reviews for its unique blend of poignant social commentary on toxic masculinity and the plight of women, seamlessly integrated with uproarious humor. Audiences across age groups have been flocking to theaters, with social media abuzz with praises for Raj B Shetty and JP Thuminad for delivering what many are calling the most entertaining film of the year.
The film, which marks the Kannada directorial debut of Tulu theatre artist and occasional film actor JP Thuminad (remembered for his role as Deepak in Sapta Sagaradaache Ello Side B), showcases a refreshing take on the horror-comedy genre. While comments on social media frequently highlight the film’s continuous hilarity, driven by the situational comedy delivered by actors like Shaneel Gautham, Deepak Rai Panaje, Prakash Thuminad, Mime Ramadas, and Pushparaj Bollar, Su From So is far from a mindless comedy.
The narrative centers around a young man’s ‘possession’ by a spirit named Sulochana from Someshwar, a neighboring village. Beyond the laughs, the film offers sharp social commentary on toxic masculinity and misogyny, primarily seen through the eyes of Bhanu, played brilliantly by Sandhya Arekere. Bhanu, a middle-aged unmarried woman, faces immense struggles and indecent intentions from men in her surroundings, including her own uncle, following her mother Sulochana’s demise. As Bhanu confides in her ‘mother’ (the spirit possessing Ashoka, played by JP Thuminad), it triggers a profound introspection and call for action within Ashoka, forming the true emotional core of Su From So.
The Kannada original Su From So had a limited release outside Karnataka but is set for wider reach with dubbed versions. Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films will release the Malayalam version on August 1, followed by the Telugu version on August 8. Anil Thadani’s AA Films will present the Hindi version, for which a release date is yet to be confirmed. The film’s international theatrical journey will also commence on August 1, with screenings in countries including the US and Germany.
