Dhaka [Bangladesh], July 22: India has extended medical assistance to Bangladesh following the tragic crash of a Bangladesh Air Force fighter jet in Dhaka’s Diabari area, which has now claimed 27 lives.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka confirmed it had formally written to the Government of Bangladesh, offering critical medical support in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier message of condolence and solidarity.
“As a follow-up to the Prime Minister’s message, expressing condolences on the tragic Milestone School plane crash and offering all possible assistance, the Indian High Commission has formally written to the Government of Bangladesh seeking information on any urgent medical support that can be arranged in India,” the statement read.
“The High Commission will extend all necessary facilitation,” it added.
According to Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the aircraft was a battle-ready F-7 fighter jet on a training mission when it crashed into the Milestone School and College campus in Dhaka on Monday afternoon.
The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Mohammad Towkir Islam Sagar of the Bangladesh Air Force, died in the crash. The tragedy unfolded during school hours, causing multiple civilian casualties, including students and staff.
Saidur Rahman, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser, confirmed the death toll had reached 27 as of Tuesday morning.
In response to the national tragedy, Bangladesh is observing a day of mourning today, paying tribute to the lives lost.
Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus of the interim government expressed deep sorrow in a condolence message on X (formerly Twitter), calling the incident an “irreparable loss” to the Bangladesh Air Force and the affected school community.
“The loss suffered by the Air Force, the students, parents, teachers, and staff of Milestone School and College, as well as others affected, is irreparable. This is a moment of profound pain for the nation,” Yunus wrote.
He further directed all concerned authorities and hospitals to prioritize the care of the injured and pledged a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.
