Joe Root Reflects On England’s Strong Start And Lord’s Pitch After Day 2 Of Third Test

London [UK], July 12: England’s batting star Joe Root expressed satisfaction with his team’s first innings total of 387 and shared his insights on the pitch conditions after an engaging second day of the third Test against India at Lord’s.

India ended the day at 145/3, trailing by 242 runs, with KL Rahul (53*) and Rishabh Pant (19*) steady at the crease. The visitors recovered from early setbacks thanks to Rahul’s resilient half-century and Pant’s aggressive return following a finger injury.

England’s innings was shaped by a century partnership between Root (104) and Ollie Pope (44), and an impactful 82-run lower-order stand between Brydon Carse and Jamie Smith, both of whom scored fifties.

Speaking at the post-day press conference, Root said, “It’s a good score. I think we’ll have a better idea once their innings ends, but the pitch generally plays best on day two. It’s already very slow and dry, and it tends to deteriorate, so having those runs on the board is crucial.”

He highlighted the importance of the Carse-Smith partnership and praised Smith’s current form and capabilities. He also pointed out how the slope at Lord’s and ball condition could play key roles as the match progresses.

Root was also thrilled to see Jofra Archer back in Test action, calling him an “X-factor” player who adds a unique edge to England’s bowling lineup. “He shows up in big games — whether in the IPL or for England. He complements our attack really well.”

On the wicket of Shubman Gill, Root said it was a major breakthrough. “He’s in serious form, and it was a big moment for us. Great thinking and skill by Woakes, and an unbelievable catch from Jamie [Smith].”

Root predicted that scoring would get tougher in the coming days and anticipated spin might come into play. “It could turn into a more old-school kind of Test match unless someone like Rishabh plays unorthodox, aggressive cricket.”

Earlier in the day, Karun Nair, making his return to the Test side, fell for 40 after a promising start. His 61-run stand with Rahul helped steady India before skipper Shubman Gill was dismissed for 16, edging Chris Woakes to Smith behind the stumps.

Despite the challenges, India will take confidence from the unbeaten 38-run partnership between Rahul and Pant heading into Day 3.

Brief Scores:
England: 387 (Joe Root 104, Brydon Carse 56; Jasprit Bumrah 5/74)
India: 145/3 (KL Rahul 53*, Karun Nair 40; Jofra Archer 1/22)
